Always remember that God not Man is the one who is supposed to judge– because we have incomplete insight and information.
Our job is to know and insomuch as possible choose what is good and right for ourselves. In proclaiming homosexuality to be a wrong choice (remember– the word “sin” means mistake) along with other things like abortion or slander or so many other things we do that are wrong– it should be understood that the repentant sinner must always be welcomed home and supported in their efforts to resolve whatever struggle they face.
The Church’s role is to set the standard– and when we fail, we know that it is between us and God, not between us and any other being or group of men.
There is a famous saying about this by Mother Theresa– you do what is good because of your relationship with your Creator, not because of what other people say or do or think.
It is the same way when we do something that others abhor– it is between us and our Creator– not subject to the ideas and assumptions of others.
Thus, I am not obligated to in any way condone abortion or homosexuality or any number of other things that happen in the world, but when another is beset with heartaches and problems as a result, it is my obligation to offer them the love of Christ.
Francis has to deal with this same dialectic on a much broader scale and as the head of a human institution. I cannot speak for him, but as anywhere from 10 to 20% of all people struggle with being affected by some aspect of gender reversal and/or homosexuality at some point during their lives, he cannot be their Shepherd if he ignores their existence, their pains, their feelings– they are still human beings and they are still entrusted to his care.
As a result you will not see Francis condoning homosexuality or abortion or any other thing the Church considers a sin, but at the same time you will not hear him preaching any sermons about hating homosexuals or judging women who have had abortions.
God knows and each one of us has plenty of bad things we have done to think about and regret– and there is no indication that one sin is any worse than another in the sight of God.
Maybe in the grand scheme of things in the view of One who truly knows the whole story and ultimate affects of sin– just MAYBE– the careless teasing and insults you traded with a classmate in Third Grade caused his whole life to be ruined, and maybe, conversely, a simple act of kindness you didn’t even consider at the time has saved someone or kept them from sin.
We simply don’t know.
So, Francis, like the rest of us, gets up every day and does his best to do the work he has before him. He hopes, I am sure, that everyone else does the same with a prayerful heart and also with a heart that knows it’s own limits and failings.
When I was little my Mother showed me that it is impossible to feel bad and grateful at the same time. So feeling grateful is an
antidote to all sadness and lack.
In the same way it is impossible to feel hate toward anyone else when we are truly aware of our own sinful nature. Sin humbles all of us. It is the Great Leveler. It exists for precisely this reason– that we must admit we are imperfect as we are, and it doesn’t matter if we are ALMOST perfect or we are missing it by ten country miles.
